Every year, review-data companies crunch Google Maps data to rank Japan’s most popular attractions among foreign visitors. In one 2026 ranking, the number one spot nationwide went to a museum in Tokyo — beating out Tokyo Tower, Tokyo Skytree, Kiyomizu-dera, and Osaka Castle combined.
It’s a real place with genuinely high ratings, offering hands-on experiences like armor try-ons and sword lessons. But it’s also a place built almost entirely around what foreign visitors expect from a trip to Japan, rather than something that shows up in ordinary Japanese life. The gap between “top-ranked in review data” and “part of how locals actually spend their time” turns out to be bigger than you’d expect.
That gap says something worth understanding before you build a Japan itinerary entirely off review-site rankings — some of what ranks highest was never meant to be a window into everyday Japan in the first place, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing to know going in.
